A Tale of Two Worlds: Potential & Mediocrity

Okay, hold on to your hats because I’m about to unload a big one on this dumpster fire of a manhwa. It’s like it took all the worst parts of Solo Leveling and somehow managed to make it even worse. I mean, SL had an interesting story, even though its characters were somewhat bland. The fights, the art, the environment design, and the enemies, all added up in creating a hype-filled experience that’s hard to be topped. The characters here… They’re flatter than pancakes. Let’s not even get to the art because it was as expressive as a potato.

I know I’m not one to talk much about this manhwa. Let’s be real, I only read 10 chapters and I know for a fact that I can’t read any more. However, that was enough to get a taste of how the story seemingly progressed.

First, we have our protag. Park Jeong-Su or the Spear Hero. His family got brutally murdered by the runaway, Sword Hero from the first chapter. Then when it was his chance to stain the tarmac with blood, he got reincarnated into another world as well. What does he do there? Or rather, what do we get to see him doing there? Train, kill goblins, becoming the anti-hero, literally and figuratively. Now you might be asking, where’s the psychological aspect of that? That my friend is what’s missing from this whole manhwa. Characters just decide to do things out of nowhere and then proceed to stick to them for the rest of their whole lives. It’s as if random thoughts or opinions don’t matter in the face of the plot god.

Alright, let’s talk about the first chapter for example. Because oh boy do I have some thoughts. Honestly, it’s the best chapter by a mile, but even then, there are some major issues. So, the Sword Hero gets sent back to his birth world and things are…not great. His parents have died horribly, his existing family hates his very existence, and no one wants anything to do with him. It’s a pretty bleak situation, to say the least. But instead of, I don’t know, trying to rebuild his life or something, he just decides to go on a killing spree. Yeah, you heard me right.

Now, let’s take a step back and think about this for a second. He spent a whole year in another world, right? And in just three weeks, everything he did there is completely undone and he just goes into full-on psycho mode, killing everyone he gets his shiny hands on. It doesn’t really make sense, does it? I mean, this is the hero we’re talking about. He’s supposed to be tough and resilient, but he just falls apart in mere days of hardship.

And the worst part is, he doesn’t seem to feel anything. No regret, no sadness, nothing. Only the feeling of revenge. It’s like he’s completely emotionless. But this is the guy who’s literally defeated the demon king. I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure how a guy who trained daily and hardened his mind and body cracks this easily.

Look, I get it, if this was just some regular person, they would probably break down in a situation like this. But this is the hero we’re talking about! He should be able to handle anything that comes his way. It’s like the whole thing just starts to fall apart the minute you take a closer look at it.

But here’s the thing, the first chapter had so much potential! If it wasn’t for the promise it showed, I wouldn’t be this angry in the first place. I would’ve simply written this off as one of those manhwa and forgotten about it.

Picture this: a person gets reincarnated into another world, builds a life for themselves, makes friends, a family, fosters children, the whole nine yards. But then they suddenly get sent back to their original world with nothing but their newfound powers. Everything they had worked for, all the relationships they had built, gone in an instant. As if everything was just a night’s sleep. Talk about trauma.

There are so many different directions the story could have taken. It could have focused on the struggle of our protag to adapt to a world they no longer knew while dealing with the trauma of losing everything they had worked so hard for. Losing touch with reality little by little, seeping further and further into despair and psychosis as they realize how different life is in this world even if he was born there. This could be a culture shock but with magnitudes heavier than anything you’d feel visiting another country.

Or, you could go the action route and have them fighting tooth and nail to get back to the world they left behind, using the skills they honed in their previous life. Looking the other way on morality for the sake of his past life. For his memories. While everyone and everything is working against them. They’re the underdog, fighting against insurmountable odds, but there are a few people who believe in them and support them along the way. Can you imagine the emotional rollercoaster a story like that could take you on?

Honestly, I’m just disappointed beyond words how this manhwa doesn’t take this amazing premise and runs with it. It had so much potential, but it just dropped the ball. Ugh, it’s enough to make me want to scream!
